Avery Tableau Online: Tableau Online
Before logging in, have your account administrator create an account for you.
Decisions Science Contact information:
Navigate to Avery’s Tableau Online account using the URL above. Login using your email, password and 2FA code (what’s a 2FA? See First time log in below)
The first time you login, you will be required to set up MFA (multi-factor authentication which encompasses two-factor authentication, 2FA).
MFA is an electronic authentication method in which a user is granted access to a website or application only after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence (or factors) to an authentication mechanism: knowledge (something only the user knows), possession (something only the user has), and inherence (something only the user is). MFA protects user data—which may include personal identification or financial assets—from being accessed by an unauthorized third party that may have been able to discover, for example, a single password. - Wikipedia
Select 2FA for authentication. This should produce a QR code that will be scanned by an Authenticator app - Use any 2FA authentication app (you may likely already be using one on your smartphone). Examples include:
Jacob's Tip: There are authenticators for your browser if you prefer using one there. An example of a browser authenticator is Authenticator which is available for Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
Open the authenticator app and add a new entry, then scan the QR code to import.
Continue to login to Tableau using your email, password then when asked to insert code for 2FA, type the code from the authenticator app (this is a timed code, ensure to type it in a timely manner or wait for the code to refresh itself before typing it in). You should now be logged into Tableau.
When you first login, you’ll be on the Home section. Here, you can quickly navigate to your Favorite projects (click the star symbol on any projects you want to display here), Recent projects you’ve opened and Recommendations.

Favorites and Recents can also be quickly access from the left side navigation pane.

From the left navigation pane, click explore. This will list all the projects you have access to. Most projects are organized by a Project folder that contain workbooks and data sources that belong to a project.
Click on an existing workbook to open it.
Depending on your Site Role, you may have a different experience that described below - In the case of the role "Viewer", which focuses on higher level analytics, instead of creating projects we will work with you to develop, edit and maintain projects. More information about role/license types can be found here: Tableau License Types
Creating and editing Tableau projects and workbooks.
A Project can be thought of as a folder that encapsulates relavent workbooks and datasources.
Projects can be nested (Project folder in another Project folder). However, this should be used with caution as it may cause confusion. See best practice below.
Nested best practice is to ensure all projects contained within are related (i.e., cross-comparision) and limited to 2 levels:
POS (Confidential) |-> Office Super Store Analysis | |-> O.D. COGS | |-> Staples COGS |-> Retail Sales and Merchandise |-> Krogar
From the Explore section, select New (drop down) > Project. Name the project and give a description. Click Create.

Navigate to your project from Explore and click into it (your project will be empty). From here, you can edit project details, set Permissions or share.

Within a project, use the New drop down to crate a workbook: New > Workbook
